I really looked forward to seeing it, especially as I am currently reading Dickens' Oliver Twist. I absolutely loved The Polar Express, and I knew that I wanted to see this movie as soon as I heard it was directed by Robert Zemeckis, the same man.
Up front, I can say this is my favorite retelling of Dickens' classic tale. The animation was wonderful, the language was kept in it's original 19th century format (at least, I'm sure for the most part), they didn't remove the spiritual elements in order to be politically correct, and it was downright chilling at points!
The parts I thought were creepy (and beware! this contains spoilers!) were:
-The opening scene, when it's an up-close shot of dead Marley's face.
-The "clunk, drag" of the chains and ring of the bells when Marley enters Scrooge's house.
-Marley's jaw. *shudders*
-The other ghosts that are tormented by their sins and chains. Specifically the one banging his head on the brick, and the one screaming to the poor mother in the street, "I wish I could help you!"
-The two "children" beneath Christmas Present's robe: Ignorance and Want. Ignorance growls at Scrooge, while Want assumes the look of a prostitute before "sprouting" a straitjacket and walking off screaming.
-Christmas Present decays as the clock strikes midnight. He turns into a skeleton, laughing all the way.
-The hearse chasing Scrooge through the streets.
-The Ghost of Christmas Yet-to-Come.
-Scrooge falling into his coffin, seeming to be located in the bowels of Hell.
:::Spoilers over!!!:::
It seemed a faithful retelling... though I have yet to read the story. I would like to before Christmas comes.
Others have said it's pretty faithful.
It's a beautiful, chilling, and heartwarming tale of Man's common need of redemption.
I recommend it to everyone! See it, see it!
(I just think it opened a bit early in the holiday season.)
